Detroit’s Three
Temporary Casinos to be Permanent with Hotels
by 2005

• Greektown Casino will build a new casino just north of its current Greektown location. The casino complex will include 100,000 square feet of gaming space, 400-room hotel, convention space and multiple restaurant selections.

• MotorCity Casino will soon break ground on a 400-room hotel at its current location. In addition to the hotel, the existing casino will be expanded to include up to 100,000 square feet of gaming space and convention space will be added. Multiple restaurant selections will be incorporated as well.

• MGM Grand Detroit Casino will move just north of its current location. The new casino complex will include 100,000 square feet of gaming space, a 16-story, and 400-room hotel, convention space and multiple restaurant selections.

Other Hotel Additions
• Historic Hospitality Investment LLC and Marriott have been selected to begin renovations of the 33-story Book Cadillac Hotel. The historic
property will have 478 rooms, 95 condominiums, shops, restaurants and 60,000 square feet of meeting space. Expected completion date: December 2005.

• Local news reports indicate an investment firm has shown inter
est in the historic Hotel Fort Shelby, located on the western fringe of the business district near Cobo Center. A proposed 275-room Holiday Inn Select and a 125-room Staybridge Suites could soon be added to Detroit’s room inventory by 2005.

The Yankee Air
Museum

It’s an odd quirk of fate that we should be writing about the Yankee Air Museum at the same time the US is involved in another war. The museum is dedicated to aircraft used in past wars. Of all the aircraft types on display at the YAM only one is still on active duty, and in fact is currently dropping bombs and cruise missiles on Iraq. That plane, a Boeing B-52D bomber,

is the YAM’s centerpiece display but it’s only one of many. In total the museum has about 20 aircraft on display plus three “flying classics” which are the pride of the museum. The YAM’s outdoor aircraft display is augmented by an indoor aircraft display and several rooms devoted to specific aviation themes or time periods. In those rooms you’ll find exhibits dedicated to: WWI aviation, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Women in Aviation, and the B-24 Liberator
