When you mention Detroit to any musician or music fan you get a nod and “Motown”, “Aretha”, “Kenny Burrell” and a long list of Rock, Blues and Jazz names and songs. We’re a musical town. And now given birth to still another type of music, Techno. To celebrate Detroit’s role in the gestation, birth and adolescence of Techno the Detroit Historical Museum opened the first
Techno music exhibit on January 18, 2003. The Exhibit, which runs through June 6, 2004 focuses on four young Detroit area men, Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, who, like Barry Gordy a generation ago, created and developed a new mucic form, an electronic style of dance music that went from home-grown to international in 20 years.
Catherine Klingman, curator of the exhibit, explained that history isn’t static, it’s constantly moving. “History is often thought of as events that occurred a very long time ago. The truth is, history is also what happened yesterday, five minutes ago, and in fact, today’s events will be tomorrow’s history. That’s why we have chosen to present this current — and uniquely Detroit — success story.” This philosophy is sort of the mirror image of Science Fiction writer Isaac Asimov’s “future history” but it will do a lot to make people realize that history is a part of their world and should be explored more often.

How about big V-8s, hot rods, custom cars, trucks, vans and motorcycles. The temperature may be in the single digits outside the Cobo Center in downtown Detroit, but inside more than 1,000 exhibits of cars will warm the blood and get it pumping in anticipation of warmer weather.
