The Wayne County Airport Authority will soon begin charging off-airport transportation providers a fee for access to facilities at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) for the purpose of passenger pick-up.
“Detroit Metro Airport is a user-funded facility,” explained Authority CEO Lester Robinson. “Those who benefit from the airport, such as airlines, restaurants, car rental companies, gift shops, parkers, passengers and contractors all pay their fair share. Taxpayers are not obligated to financially support the airport or back our bonds unless they use the facility. That’s why it’s important to capture revenue from airport users. These rather nominal charges will help support capital projects at the airport.”
At first, airport management will assign a flat monthly fee to commercial vehicles based on frequency of visits; but by the end of the year, a Automated Vehicle Identification (AVI) system will be installed to electronically track commercial vehicles as they enter and exit ground transportation facilities. Letters have been mailed to such providers informing them of the change.
See page 9 for a description of the categories and fees.
“Other airports which have implemented such systems have benefited in two ways,” continued Robinson. “Roadway traffic and congestion is significantly reduced and important revenue is generated for the airport. It is incumbent on us to operate this airport as like a business and to recover cost associated with providing for commercial vehicles’ use of the facilities. Other airports in our peer group have been capturing
