Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Eddie Arnold, Jimmy Dean, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Jimmy Rogers and a dozen other names leap to mind when I think of Country Music. To me a Country Music band is a slide steel guitar, Fender electric guitar, drums, standup base and a singer who’s lost their girlfriend/boyfriend, husband/wife, house, job or dog and sings about it; and sings the hell out of it. They may rip one off about their moonshinin’ Uncle or Granpappy or a sad one about a friend like Johnny Cash’s “Doc Brown has Moved Upstairs.” But that’s the roots of Country Music and this is 2003.
You don’t get Country Music like that any more. What you get Saturday, May 16 through Sunday, May 18 is live Country Music with a couple of hundred thousand of your closest country music-loving friends. The 2003 Budweiser Downtown Hoedown kicks off the summer festivities at Hart Plaza on the River. Hart Plaza in the summer is a trip every weekend. After the Hoedown there’s the Electronic Music Festival, now called “Movement 2003”, Praisefest, featuring gospel music, and the International Freedom Festival. And that just takes us up to July. There’s more to come.
Budweiser Downtown Hoedown Kicks off Summer at the Plaza!
The lead-off summer event is, as we mentioned, the 21st Annual Budweiser Downtown Hoedown which began in 1983 and is now widely recognized as the largest Country Music show of its kind in the world. Over the Hoedown’s 20 year
history attendance has exceeded 750,000 visitors annually. In 1996 a record attendance of 1,000,000 people was set. The festival is regarded by the Country Music Industry as a premier showcase opportunity for both
